Originally, they were given to children and geisha in Gion-cho as New Year's gifts at the end of the year, and are a traditional culture handed down only in Higashiyama-ku (Gion) among the geisha districts of Kyoto. It is said that there was also a custom of cracking them open after the bells had rung on New Year's Eve, and using the contents to tell fortunes for the new year.
